Horizons Albuquerque is a transformational, community-centered, summer learning program proven to close the opportunity gap.
One year into the pandemic, COVID-19 continues to deeply impact our Horizons Albuquerque community.
2020 was a Summer Like no Other. Horizons Albuquerque rose to the challenge to move our summer programming to a virtual platform, allowing us to continue to provide meaningful academic and enrichment opportunities for students. Although providing academic support is a primary goal of Horizons Albuquerque, our focus last summer was to promote connections before content. Horizons values our on-going relationships with families. Since students enter our program in first grade and continue through their graduation in high school, strong on-going relationships are built with each family. In addition to academic support, we also provided guitar, art, jump rope, tennis, chess, civics, and mindfulness activities for scholars, and we did it all virtually. We supplied needed equipment and devices to be used from home that would have ordinarily been shared. Breakfast and lunch were also provided daily for families as all of our students qualify for free lunch and face food insecurities.
A year later, we are preparing to return to in-person programming. Horizons’ enrichment programs continue to serve as a cornerstone of our efforts to reverse both “summer slide” and now, COVID-19 learning loss. With data already showing that students who came into the pandemic with the fewest academic opportunities are on track to exit with the greatest learning loss, many experts predict that summer 2021 will be the start of academic recovery.
At Horizons Albuquerque, we recognize that the losses of the past year extend far beyond learning. Now more than ever, we are committed to our mission to close the opportunity gap, only widened by the pandemic. Your support is critical in ensuring that we can walk with our scholars on the path to academic recovery and whole-child wellbeing in the wake of this most challenging year. Summer 2021 must also be a time to gather as a community to begin the work of healing, to invest in mental health, and ensure that our scholars’ basic needs - including devices, meals, PPE, and internet connectivity - are met.
With your support, we can meet our scholars and families where they are, delivering high-quality, engaging summer learning and enrichment programs that foster learning, growth, play, and whole-child wellbeing. By donating to us on Horizons Giving Day, you're not only helping close gaps in achievement and opportunity – you’re helping students succeed.
